Sergeant William Herbert Martin
The only reference to this man's military service that I have located is in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour, which shows him as a sergeant in the North Irish Horse, living at 2 Myrtlefield Park, Belfast, and a member of the Malone Belfast Congregation. The Roll includes another reference to a William Herbert Martin serving as a sergeant with the regiment, but he appears to be a different man.
William Herbert Martin was born on 14 February 1889 at 60 Fitzwilliam Street, Belfast, the first of two children of warehouseman John Thomson Martin and his wife Annie (née McAuley). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Myrtlefield Park with his parents and sister, having received a Bachelor of Arts from the Queen's University Belfast the previous year.
Martin's date of enlistment in the North Irish Horse is not known; nor is his regimental number. It appears that he did not serve overseas during the war.
It is probable that he is the man referred to in the article below, who died on 22 September 1970 and was buried in St Nicholas Churchyard, Carrickfergus.
